Racism Makes Me Sad… And Angry!

This is Miss America 2014, Nina Davuluri. She’s a beautiful young woman, aspiring cardiologist, who was born in Syracuse, New York. Her parents have been here since 1981, and her father is a gynecologist. Nina graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in brain behavior and cognitive science, and received several scholastic achievement awards. I did not watch the competition, but I’m sure that she deserved to win!

What is really upsetting to me is all of the backlash she is facing for being an Indian-American. Some of the tweets and Facebook posts I have seen are outrageous. Just because she may look different than than the blond-haired, blue-eyed Miss Americas of yesteryear does not mean that she isn’t American or is a terrorist. She is as American as anyone else who was born and raised here.

Unless you are of Native American descent, we ALL descend from somewhere else. It may trace back to 200 years ago, 100 years ago, or in Nina’s case 32 years ago, but we are all equally American.

I used to think that we were making progress toward eliminating racism, but it seems that it’s just the face of racism that is changing. People target their hate on people from the Middle East and justify it by bunching everyone together as terrorists. It makes me sad that my children still have to witness racism, and it makes me angry that people still behave that way.

Ok, I think I’m done venting! Have a great Monday!
